Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you got til it’s gone -Joni Mitchell
I’ve been contemplating the words to this song and the meaning of taking things and people in our lives for granted. It seems we all do that, we lack appreciation until the things we have are gone. It seems that only then, we long for what we once had and question ourselves.. and ask, why did I not appreciate my husband (wife), partner, friend parents, child, career, home, etc.
It seems particularly fitting to think about gratitude on this 9-11 weekend, when we think so much about what was lost, while we grieve the loss of lives and ponder ..if only.
Let’s all make a vow to appreciate more, to be present-oriented and aware of both what we have and what we could lose in an instant. I think if we could focus on enjoying and being grateful for the blessings in our lives.. we would all feel a bit more satisfied, like we’ve just discovered paradise.
A wise soul once said many years ago, “Be conscious of what you may have and aware of what you may lose.”
